The first season of Though I Am an Inept Villainess wrapped up its 11-episode run on September 20, 2026. If you followed it weekly on Netflix (or binged it over Crunchyroll), you already know it’s the absolute perfect show to pair with a warm dinner.

If you’ve been missing the imperial palace drama and gorgeous aesthetic of The Apothecary Diaries, this is exactly what you need to scratch that itch. It has the full checklist: emperors, rival concubines, lavish lifestyles, and beautiful traditional customs.

But it’s the twist that really makes this show special.

The Premise: A Poisoned Switch

At first glance, Maiden Kou Reirin looks like a fragile, pale “powder-puff princess”. In reality, she’s dealing with a chronically ill body and keeps herself busy with heavy crafts, like embroidery, stitching, and painting, just to distract herself from the constant pain.

Everything gets turned upside down during the Double Sevens Festival when she is forced to swap bodies with the palace’s most hated villainess, Shu Keigetsu. What looks like a random magical curse is actually a deeply engineered palace conspiracy. Reirin is suddenly left trapped in a villain’s reputation, facing the consequences of crimes she didn’t commit.

The Best Part: Deep Gratitude for a Healthy Body

The absolute standout moment of the series isn’t a massive plot twist – it’s how Reirin reacts to her new body.

When she realizes just how strong and capable Keigetsu’s physical body actually is, she doesn’t leave any stone unturned to make it more fit and healthy and make full use of its fine potential. You can feel her gratitude right in your bones, just how grateful she was to experience a healthy body. We also get that Reirin never hated her original body, but she uses this chance to fully live out a standard of health that most people take for granted.

Equally beautiful is the seasonal dance she performs, praying to the gods to bring a prosperous season to the nation. This whole tradition of thanking and seeking the blessings of nature adds a wonderful layer to the show. What makes it work so well is how incredibly confident Reirin remains in her manners, no matter which body she is occupying. It is her natural aura that truly makes people gravitate toward her.

Unapologetically Female-Centric

Group portrait of the female characters from Though I Am an Inept Villainess, with the two main heroines in the foreground, surrounded by other elegantly dressed palace women in traditional robes, against a warm autumn palace backdrop with glowing butterflies and falling maple leaves.

This show is a total powerhouse of sophisticated, highly intelligent, and deeply scheming women. It never treats their ambition or shrewdness as a flaw. Our main heroine is essentially “vanilla-coded” and sweet on the surface, but absolutely fierce like fire underneath.

Animation and Other Aspect

Studio Doga Kobo’s animation is pretty solid, though nothing particularly groundbreaking. It does its job well, but the real highlight is the character and costume design. Shu Keigetsu, in particular, is designed really well. Her sharp looks match her sharp tongue and defensive attitude perfectly.

The color palette also works in the series’ favor. The warm autumn tones give it a cozy, almost comforting feel, which contrasts nicely with the darker story full of conspiracies and schemes.

The Final Rating: 4/5 – A confident, beautifully structured comfort watch
